Color Me Red, Color Me Blue: Red Light and Methylene Blue Therapy May Save Your Life

The Color Spectrum Therapy has been known since ancient times for medical incurables but not well known in the chemistry based, pharmaceutical dominant Western Medicine. When in doubt, let the patients get out of the cave or out of the dark room and expose them to sunlight (simply called Sunlight Therapy), or Heliotherapy and cosmic rays. Miracle cures can happen. The average healthy person needs full spectrum sunlight plus cosmic rays. An unhealthy person needs additional specific color spectrum light to promote healing. I wrote an article on this subject in 2010, Color Me Blue, Color Me Red: Biocybernetics and Color Medicine Conference in St. Louis.

Colors have been used for medical therapeutic purposes over the ages since ancient times. There are assignments of colors to certain organs, functions or conditions in the teaching of Ayurvedic Medicine with the Chakra system and Traditional Chinese Medicine with acupuncture meridians. Each color spectrum has its own frequency, wavelength, pitch and each organ respond to certain wavelength, chakra and color frequency.

According to Franz Morell, MD from Germany, who wrote, The MORA Concept, it is less well known in Western Medicine that colored light is of vital importance to life. Small animals, which were kept in total exclusion from light, became ill or died, although they had been fed well and had sufficient space to move around. Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp, Ph.D., prominent German biophysicist, found that every living organism has photon emissions which cannot be suppressed. Cell-to-cell communication through biophotons before, during and after billions of biochemical interactions in the body at the cellular level. Even blind children respond to color therapy. They respond to the frequency of the color spectrum.

Color frequency can be amplified. Dr. Zenon Gruba of Australia was able to amplify 400,000 times to achieve a dramatic response to pain. 90% of people responded to the color Red, and 10% responded to the color Blue for pain, according to Dr. Gruba. His lecture in November 2006 stunned the audience at the International Symposium of Biocybernetic Medicine in Germany. I was there and witnessed it, and have been using Biophoton Laser Therapy and Color Therapy with limited success.

Since then, many articles have been published on biophoton therapy or photon-dynamic color therapy, including low level intravenous (IV) color laser therapy. I had two IV intravenous UV light laser color therapies (UVLrx) in my clinic but they have been pulled off from the market, most likely because the company claimed too much for an investigational medical device. Among the many color therapies on the market today, these two distinct color therapies are promising, simple to use, low cost, and have high potential for medical benefits: Red Light Therapy and Methylene Blue dye.

Red Light therapy works by activating mitochondria cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV) and turning on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation respiration. This is the fourth step of cellular respiration, the metabolic pathway that uses glucose to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an organic compound which the body uses to produce energy. Another mechanism is through the concept of “Hormesis” and red light stimulation by creating a transient metabolic stress-like exercise. The red light color spectrum goes from about 600 to 700 nm; the near infrared spectrum goes about 700 to 1,100 nm. Red and near infrared light therapy devices have been FDA-approved for several purposes to date, including pain relief, wound healing, anti-aging, hair loss reversal, acne treatment, fat loss, etc.

Benefits of red and near-infrared light therapy from Ari Whitten’s book on Red Light Therapy:

  • Increase overall energy
  • Combat skin aging, wrinkles, cellulite
  • Speed up fat loss
  • Improve muscle recovery and athletic performance
  • Improve mood and cognitive function
  • Speed healing from injury
  • Improve metabolism and hormonal health

Methylene Blue (methylthionium chloride) was first synthesized in 1876 by German chemist Heinrich Caro to stain wool for the textile industry. In 1880, microbiologist Robert Koch pioneered the use of methylene blue for staining cells and microbes. The application of methylene blue has been expanded for Malaria-causing intracellular parasites called Plasmodium vivax, and during the Second World War, methylene blue was given to soldiers as an antimalarial drug, until it was replaced with the patented drug, hydroxychloroquine, which is based on methylene blue dye.

The primary ways that methylene blue benefits the body is its role as a nitric oxide inhibitor and estrogen antagonist. By reducing nitric oxide and estrogen, thyroid function is increased, and the body benefits from increased metabolic rate and overall energy production. Methylene blue acts on the mitochondria respiration chain I-IV complex. For more information, see Gonzalez-Lima and Auchter’s 2015 article in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience.

Combining Red Light therapy and Methylene Blue dye color therapy are relatively cheap, synergistic adjunct therapies to IV UV light/Ozone therapy. The benefits and side effects of methylene blue are reviewed in a 2010 article by Ginimuge and Jyothi, Methylene Blue Revisited. It has many benefits, but is contraindicated in patients with renal insufficiency. It is an MAO inhibitor and can interact with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and MAO inhibitors, and interacts with dapsone and forms hydroxylamine which oxidizes hemoglobin causing hemolysis – the destruction of red blood cells.

Interestingly, heavily promoted Nitric Oxide (NO) may do more harm than good in the long run. Sildenafil (Viagra), the new wonder drug for erection, works by blocking what’s called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5), a enzyme in the body that breaks down chemicals responsible for reactions and raises nitric oxide. As a result, penile tissues stay relaxed and engorged with blood.

Pharmaceutical industries have sold to the unsuspecting public the virtues of raising Nitric Oxide with Sildenafil (Viagra) or Tadalafil (Cialis) as a new generation of molecular medicine for Erectile Dysfunction, and additional hypes including reducing risk of Alzheimer’s disease and pulmonary hypertension.  Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad shared the Noble Prize in 1998 for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system for the vasodilation. However, basic science indicates raising nitric oxide may also be a concern as it acts as a free radical, is highly reactive, and can add oxidative stress that increases in the body with age. The body’s primary vasodilator is carbon dioxide (CO2). Nitric oxide acts as a stress signaling molecule for a short-term benefit and contradicts the long-term benefits claims.

The top 10 benefits and potential indications for Methylene Blue, from Mark Sloan’s book:

Prevention and Healing will add a Nordic Health Solutions Red Light Therapy Bed in July. It has two pulsing red light frequencies and two near infrared light frequencies. This light bed has the most scientifically proven health benefits of red light therapy with 635nm and 660nm red light frequencies. In addition, it has near infrared light frequencies of 850 nm and 940nm. For more information, contact John F Kressler II, MD, MA, MS with Nordic Health Solutions, LLC in Pennsylvania, USA, email drkressler@nordichealthsolutions.com or visit the website to learn more: https://nordichealthsolutions.com/nordic-health-solutions-red-light-photobiomodulation-therapy-bed/.

One caution: Application of Red Light and Methylene Blue Therapies may sound too good to be true. These therapies can be done at home but are not as simple as you may think. Be informed. If you have active dental infections, parasite/fungal infections, nutritional deficiency or heavy metals, environmental toxin exposure or trauma, these problems must be addressed first, or concurrently, otherwise, you may have a disappointing response; another hype and another disappointment. I highly recommend two books, The Ultimate Guide to Red Light Therapy by Ari Whitten, and The Ultimate Guide to Methylene Blue. These two therapies may save your life, of the life of a loved one.
